Align Edge Loops Evenly with LoopTools in Blender
Blender’s built-in LoopTools add-on provides powerful modeling utilities that allow you to quickly organize messy topology. By utilizing the "Space" and "Relax" tools within LoopTools, you can distribute vertices evenly along an edge loop and align uneven geometry with just a few clicks. This guide covers how to enable the add-on, evenly space vertices along edge loops, and adjust the operator settings for clean topology.
1. Enable the LoopTools Add-on
LoopTools comes pre-installed with Blender but must be enabled manually:
- Go to Edit > Preferences.
- Select the Add-ons tab on the left.
- In the search bar at the top right, type LoopTools.
- Check the box next to Mesh: LoopTools.
- Close the Preferences window.
2. Select the Edge Loop
- Select your mesh and press Tab to enter Edit Mode.
- Switch to Edge Select mode (press 2 on your keyboard).
- Hold Alt (or Option on macOS) and Left-Click on an edge to select the entire continuous edge loop. To select multiple loops, hold Shift + Alt and click additional loops.
3. Space Vertices Evenly
To distribute the vertices along the selected loop so that the distance between each vertex is identical:
- With the edge loop selected, Right-Click in the 3D Viewport to open the Edge Context Menu.
- Hover over LoopTools at the top of the menu.
- Click Space.
The vertices along the selected loop will instantly shift to maintain equal spacing while preserving the overall curve or shape of the loop.
4. Align and Smooth Uneven Loops
If your edge loop is jagged or needs alignment in addition to even spacing:
- Relax: Go to Right-Click > LoopTools > Relax. This smooths the distribution of vertices along the loop without flattening the geometry.
- Curve: Go to Right-Click > LoopTools > Curve to turn the selected edge loop into a smooth, interpolated curve between the loop’s endpoints.
- Flatten: Go to Right-Click > LoopTools > Flatten to project all vertices of the loop onto a single flat plane.
5. Fine-Tune Operator Settings
Immediately after running a LoopTools operation, expand the Operator Panel in the bottom-left corner of the viewport (labeled Space, Relax, or the tool used):
- Influence: Adjust the slider from
0.0to100.0%to control how strongly the tool affects the vertices. - Interpolation: Choose between Cubic (smoother transition) or Linear (straight line between points).
- Input: Choose Selection to affect only selected geometry, or use parallel loops if working with multiple selections.
