The BitTorrent private flag is a critical metadata setting designed to restrict file sharing strictly to authorized trackers while disabling public peer-discovery mechanisms. When a torrent client ignores this flag on a confidential or exclusive torrent, it broadcasts the swarm to the wider internet via public discovery protocols. This breach undermines tracker-based access controls, compromises confidential data, exposes user IP addresses, and typically results in swift disciplinary action or permanent bans from private tracker communities.

Public Peer Discovery is Automatically Activated

Under normal circumstances, the private=1 flag in a torrent file instructs the BitTorrent client to disable three decentralized peer-discovery tools:
