I Ching Hexagrams and Leibniz Binary System
This article explores the historical and conceptual connection between the ancient Chinese divination text, the I Ching (Book of Changes), and the modern binary numeral system developed by German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Leibniz realized that the ancient 64 hexagrams of the I Ching corresponded directly to binary numbers from 0 to 63. This discovery validated Leibniz’s belief that binary mathematics was not only a universal language of logic and creation but also an ancient truth independently discovered thousands of years earlier.
The Binary Nature of the I Ching
The I Ching is built on dualistic concepts represented by
two fundamental types of lines: * Yin (Broken Line,
⚋): Represents receptive, passive, dark, or empty
states. * Yang (Solid Line, ⚊): Represents
active, creative, light, or full states.
By stacking these lines into groups of six, the system creates 64
unique figures known as hexagrams (\(2^6 = 64\)). Conceptually, this mirrors the
base-2 binary system, where every position can hold one of two states:
0 or 1. In modern computational terms, each
line is a single bit, and each hexagram represents a 6-bit binary
word.
Leibniz’s Discovery and Joachim Bouvet
Leibniz had already formulated his binary arithmetic (Explication
de l’Arithmétique Binaire) in the late 17th century, arguing that
any number could be represented using only the digits 0 and 1. He
associated 1 with God and being, and 0 with
the void and nothingness.
In 1701, French Jesuit missionary Joachim Bouvet, stationed in Beijing, sent Leibniz a diagram of the 64 hexagrams arranged by the 11th-century Song dynasty philosopher Shao Yong (the Fuxi sequence). When Leibniz analyzed the arrangement, he noticed an exact mathematical progression:

Conceptual and Philosophical Parallels
Leibniz did not view this alignment as a coincidence. He interpreted the I Ching as evidence that ancient Chinese scholars possessed an advanced, lost understanding of binary logic and universal mathematics.
- Universal Logic (Mathesis Universalis): Leibniz sought a universal formal language that could reduce all reasoning to calculation. He saw the hexagrams as proof that binary logic was an intrinsic, universal structure of thought.
- Creation from Nothingness (Creatio ex Nihilo): Just as all numbers could be generated from the interplay of 0 and 1, the I Ching described the universe as constantly generated through the dynamic interaction of Yin and Yang.
Leibniz’s realization that an ancient philosophical text shared the same underlying logic as his binary arithmetic remains one of the earliest and most profound cross-cultural intersections between Eastern philosophy and Western mathematical science.
