While the AVIF format offers superior compression ratios and modern codec capabilities compared to legacy formats like JPEG and PNG, practical implementation hurdles continue to frustrate creative workflows. Designers frequently encounter friction caused by absent progressive decoding, inadequate native integration in popular design software, inconsistent color reproduction across platforms, inefficient lossless compression, and limited support for animated assets. Addressing these feature gaps is essential for AVIF to achieve seamless adoption across modern UI/UX and visual design pipelines.
True Progressive Rendering
Designers rely on progressive rendering to deliver a smooth perceived loading experience on slow network connections. Unlike progressive JPEG, which displays an immediate low-resolution preview that sharpens as data arrives, current AVIF implementations in web browsers typically decode line-by-line or tile-by-tile. This results in empty blocks or sudden visual pop-in, disrupting the layout and visual flow of media-heavy interfaces. Creative teams consistently request standardized multi-pass progressive decoding support across all major rendering engines.
Native Integration in Core Design Tools
The disconnect between browser support and creative software remains a major bottleneck. Industry-standard design platforms like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe Creative Cloud either lack native AVIF export capabilities or require third-party plugins and external conversion scripts. Designers need native, in-canvas previewing, direct export options with customizable quality sliders, and instant drag-and-drop import without resorting to command-line utilities or intermediary formats.
Consistent Cross-Platform Color Management and HDR Tonemapping
AVIF supports 10-bit and 12-bit color depths, wide color gamuts (P3, Rec. 2020), and High Dynamic Range (HDR). However, actual implementations across operating systems and browsers handle color management inconsistently. Designers frequently report unpredictable tone mapping, where HDR assets appear overly blown out on standard dynamic range (SDR) displays or shift noticeably in saturation between Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. A predictable, standardized fallback and tonemapping behavior is a top priority for brand designers who require strict color fidelity.
Efficient Lossless Compression
While AVIF excels at aggressive lossy compression for photographs, its lossless encoding mode lags behind alternatives like WebP and optimized PNGs. For UI assets, iconography, and graphics containing sharp text or flat vector shapes, AVIF often yields larger file sizes or demands unacceptably high CPU overhead during encoding. Designers still need a reliable, high-performance lossless mode within the AVIF specification that matches or exceeds WebP's balance of compression speed and file size.
Streamlined Tooling for Animated AVIF (AVIFS)
Animated AVIF provides an alternative to heavy GIFs and animated WebP files, but the production pipeline is severely underdeveloped. Designers currently lack straightforward ways to inspect frame rates, configure looping behavior, adjust transparency across frames, or scrub through timelines in graphical applications. Furthermore, encoding animated AVIF files requires excessive compute power, leading designers to avoid the format entirely for UI animations and short looping graphics.
