AVIF Longevity and Archival Reliability in Libraries

This article evaluates the viability of the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) for long-term digital preservation within library and cultural heritage collections. While AVIF offers superior compression, modern color-space handling, and robust metadata support, its relative youth raises critical questions regarding format obsolescence, software dependency, and institutional adoption. Balancing these factors is essential for preservation specialists determining whether AVIF can serve as an archival master format or if it is currently better suited strictly for web delivery and access derivatives.

Open Standards and Governance

Archival formats must be open, non-proprietary, and thoroughly documented to prevent vendor lock-in and ensure long-term accessibility. AVIF meets these core archival prerequisites. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia)—a consortium that includes major technology institutions such as Google, Mozilla, and Microsoft—AVIF is an open, royalty-free standard. It wraps AV1-compressed image frames inside the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) container. Because both the container specification and the underlying compression technology are publicly documented, future archivists will have the theoretical blueprint required to decode the bitstreams even if current software implementations disappear.

Preservation Integrity: Lossless Compression and Metadata

Libraries require exact fidelity for preservation master copies, typically favoring uncompressed or mathematically lossless compression schemes. AVIF supports genuine lossless compression, 8-, 10-, and 12-bit color depths, full-resolution color subsampling (4:4:4), and wide color gamuts using International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles. This ensures that fine gradations in digitized manuscripts, photographic collections, and historic prints are retained without degradation.

Furthermore, archival reliability depends heavily on metadata preservation. AVIF supports standard embedded metadata containers, including XMP and EXIF, alongside native support for transparency (alpha channels) and image sequences. This allows libraries to bundle provenance, rights management, and technical digitization data directly within the image file.

Tooling, Software Ecosystem, and Obsolescence Risk

The most significant vulnerability of AVIF in archival settings is its software ecosystem maturity. Standard formats like TIFF and JPEG have decades of stable tool support across operating systems, command-line utilities, and specialized preservation repositories. While modern web browsers and major image libraries (such as libavif and ImageMagick) support AVIF, institutional digital preservation tools (like JHOVE for format validation and characterization) have only begun integrating comprehensive AVIF profiling.

The long-term reliability of an image format depends on the ubiquity of its decoders. If an institution cannot reliably validate, extract technical characteristics from, and render an AVIF file through standardized, automated ingestion pipelines, the format introduces administrative risk into an archival repository.

Computational Overhead

Encoding AVIF files requires substantial processing power compared to legacy formats like TIFF or standard JPEG. While this computational expense is manageable for small datasets, mass digitization workflows scanning millions of pages may face significant pipeline bottlenecks during AVIF encoding. Conversely, decoding efficiency is improving rapidly due to hardware acceleration, meaning access speeds for end-users are high once the files are generated.

Current Viability for Archival Collections

At present, AVIF does not yet possess the decades-long track record required to replace uncompressed TIFF as the definitive preservation master format for library collections. However, it exhibits far greater long-term reliability than proprietary formats and outperforms older standards in compression efficiency and feature support. Currently, the most practical approach for libraries is to deploy AVIF as a highly efficient access format, while monitoring the ongoing standardization of AVIF validation tooling to evaluate its future potential for long-term storage.
