Which Nvidia GPUs Support AV1 Hardware Decoding?
Nvidia introduced hardware-accelerated AV1 video decoding with the GeForce RTX 30 Series, built on the Ampere architecture. This generation marked a significant milestone for media playback, offloading the processing of high-resolution, bandwidth-efficient AV1 streams directly to dedicated silicon to minimize CPU usage and system power consumption.
The GeForce RTX 30 Series features Nvidia's fifth-generation video decoder (NVDEC). This dedicated hardware block supports full AV1 decode acceleration for resolutions up to 8K at 60 frames per second with 10-bit and 12-bit color depths.
Every desktop and laptop GPU within the RTX 30 Series lineup includes this decoding capability, including:

- GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti

Subsequent architectures, such as the GeForce RTX 40 Series (Ada Lovelace), retain AV1 hardware decoding through the sixth-generation NVDEC and expand functionality by introducing dual eighth-generation NVENC encoders for AV1 hardware encoding.
Hardware decoding support is critical because the AV1 codec offers roughly 50 percent better compression efficiency than H.264 and 20 to 30 percent better efficiency than HEVC (H.265). With major streaming platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Twitch increasingly adopting the format, RTX 30 Series GPUs and newer ensure smooth, stutter-free playback of high-bitrate AV1 content without taxing system performance.
