AV1 Codec Lifecycle: When Will Next-Gen Replace It?
The AV1 video codec, developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), is currently in its primary expansion phase and is projected to remain the dominant open-source video standard through roughly 2030 to 2032. This article examines the technological and economic lifecycle of AV1, the stages of its hardware and streaming adoption, and the timeline for when next-generation codecs like AV2 (AOMedia Video Model) and VVC (H.266) are anticipated to overtake it in mainstream media distribution.
Current Market Position: The Hardware Acceleration Phase (2023–2026)
AV1 was finalized in 2018, but video codecs historically require five to seven years to achieve ubiquity due to hardware replacement cycles. Between 2020 and 2024, AV1 gained native hardware-accelerated decoding across major silicon providers, including Apple (A17 Pro, M3 series and newer), Qualcomm (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and newer), MediaTek, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia.
Because of this installed base, streaming giants such as YouTube, Netflix, and Meta are actively expanding AV1 delivery to reduce egress bandwidth costs. This phase marks the transition of AV1 from an experimental format to a default streaming standard for desktop and mobile clients.
Peak Dominance Window (2026–2031)
AV1 is expected to reach peak market utility between 2026 and 2031. During this window, the codec will provide its highest return on investment for service operators:
- Ubiquitous Decoding: By 2026, the vast majority of active smartphones, smart TVs, streaming sticks, and PCs will support AV1 decoding in silicon, eliminating battery and thermal penalties associated with software decoding.
- Licensing Relief: Broadcasters and streaming platforms will continue prioritizing AV1 to avoid the fragmented, costly patent licensing structures associated with proprietary standards like HEVC (H.265) and VVC (H.266).
- High-Resolution Standard: AV1 will serve as the primary format for 4K and 8K streaming, high-framerate cloud gaming, and real-time WebRTC communications.
The Successor Pipeline: AV2 and Emerging Codecs
The replacement of AV1 will be driven by the need for greater compression efficiency to handle immersive formats, volumetric video, and higher-density live streams.
- AOMedia Video Model (AV2): AOMedia is actively developing AV2, targeting an additional 20% to 30% reduction in bitrate over AV1 with comparable visual quality. Research and standardization are expected to finalize between 2025 and 2026. Following the standard release-to-hardware lag, mass-market consumer silicon supporting AV2 will likely begin appearing around 2028 to 2029.
- VVC (H.266): While finalized in 2020 by the ITU/ISO Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) with 30–50% better compression than HEVC, complex licensing pools and slow silicon adoption have delayed its dominance. VVC may capture specific broadcast and niche premium tiers, but it is unlikely to displace AV1 in broad internet streaming.
- ECM (Enhanced Compression Model): JVET is already researching post-VVC compression, aiming for practical realization in the early 2030s.
The Sunset and Legacy Phase (2032 and Beyond)
Historical precedent from H.264 and HEVC demonstrates that older codecs persist long after their successors launch. While next-generation alternatives like AV2 will begin taking over premium high-bandwidth workloads around 2029 to 2031, AV1 will not abruptly disappear.
AV1 will transition into a secondary fallback codec in the early 2030s, ensuring legacy playback compatibility for older devices. Its viable lifecycle as a frontline, high-efficiency distribution codec spans approximately 12 to 14 years from its 2018 specification release, securing its mainstream relevance until approximately 2030 to 2032.
