How Dynamic Compression Lowers Volume
To understand make-up gain, it helps to understand what dynamic range compression does first. When you apply compression to an audio signal, the processor monitors incoming volume levels. Any sound that exceeds the specified Threshold is turned down based on the chosen Ratio.
Because the compressor actively attenuates (turns down) the loudest sections of your track, the total volume and perceived energy of the audio decrease. While the dynamic range—the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds—has been narrowed, the overall track sounds noticeably quieter than the original uncompressed file.
What the Make-up Gain Setting Does
When you check the box labeled "Make-up gain for 0 dB after compressing" in Audacity:
