What Does Stereo Width Do in Audacity Reverb?
The Stereo Width slider in Audacity's Reverb dialog controls the perceived physical spread of the reverberation effect across the left and right audio channels. By adjusting this setting, you determine how focused or expansive the simulated room reflections sound in the stereo field, allowing the reverb tail to sit directly in the center or wrap widely around the listener.
How the Stereo Width Slider Works
The Stereo Width parameter is measured as a percentage, ranging from 0% to 100%:
- 0% (Mono Reverb): At the minimum setting, the reverb effect is mixed entirely in mono. The left and right channels receive the exact same reverberation signal. This concentrates the reverb directly in the center of the soundstage, creating a tight, focused, and intimate effect.
- 100% (Maximum Stereo Spread): At the maximum setting, the difference between the reflections in the left and right channels is maximized. This creates a wide, immersive spatial effect that makes the simulated environment sound larger and more three-dimensional.
- Intermediate Values (1% to 99%): Settings between the two extremes blend the mono and stereo reflections, offering varying degrees of width to fit naturally within a complete audio mix.
Track Requirements
The Stereo Width slider only functions on stereo audio tracks. If you apply the Reverb effect to a single mono track, the Stereo Width slider will have no audible impact because a mono track possesses only one channel of audio. To use the Stereo Width feature on a mono recording, you must first convert or duplicate the track into a stereo track before applying the effect.
When to Adjust Stereo Width
- Narrow Width (0% – 40%): Best for solo vocals, spoken word podcasts, bass instruments, or kick drums where you want to prevent the reverb from cluttering the edges of the mix or masking side-panned instruments.
- Wide Width (70% – 100%): Best for ambient soundscapes, background vocals, orchestral sections, and acoustic guitars where you want to enhance the sense of acoustic space, depth, and immersion.
