Visual Indicators for Clipping in Audacity Meters

Audacity provides distinct real-time visual feedback on its recording and playback meters to warn you when audio exceeds the maximum digital threshold. This article explains the specific visual indicators used on Audacity’s Meter Toolbars to identify audio clipping, detailing how color changes, peak hold markers, and dedicated red clip bars signal that your audio is distorting.

Dynamic Color Spectrum (Green, Yellow, and Red)

The primary visual indicator on Audacity’s Meter Toolbar is the dynamic color-coded volume bar. As sound plays or is recorded, the meter displays volume levels using three distinct color zones:

When an audio signal reaches or exceeds 0 dBFS, Audacity triggers a dedicated clipping indicator. This appears as a solid red vertical bar at the extreme right-hand edge (or top edge, if meters are oriented vertically) of the meter channel.

Peak Hold Lines

Audacity also displays a thin line within the meter known as the "peak hold" marker. While the main colored bar bounces dynamically with current RMS/perceived volume, the peak hold line remains at the highest point reached by recent transient peaks. If this line pushes all the way to the 0 dB mark, it visually confirms that your peaks are peaking at the ceiling, even if the red clip indicator hasn't remained locked.

Complementary Track Clipping (View Menu)

While the meters handle live monitoring, Audacity also pairs this with track-level visualization. By navigating to View > Show Clipping (on/off), any clipped samples detected on the audio meter will correspond to bright vertical red lines directly over the audio waveform on the track itself.
