Speed Up Podcast Playback in Audacity

Reviewing long podcast episodes can consume valuable editing time, but increasing playback speed makes the proofing process significantly faster. This guide explains how to use Audacity’s built-in playback tools and keyboard shortcuts to listen to your audio at 1.5x, 2x, or faster speeds during editing without permanently altering the project's original pitch, tempo, or final exported file.

Step 1: Enable the Play-at-Speed Toolbar

Audacity includes a dedicated playback speed controller that changes how fast you hear the project without modifying the actual audio waveforms.

  1. Open your podcast project in Audacity.
  2. Look for the Play-at-Speed control in the top toolbar area. It features a play button next to a small speed slider.
  3. If you do not see it, enable it manually by going to the top menu and selecting View > Toolbars > Play-at-Speed Toolbar.

Step 2: Adjust the Playback Rate

  1. Locate the slider next to the green Play-at-Speed icon.
  2. Drag the slider to the right to increase the speed multiplier. Setting it to 1.50x or 2.00x is standard for podcast review, allowing you to catch verbal mistakes, dead air, and awkward cuts in half the time.
  3. To start playback at your chosen rate, click the Play-at-Speed button directly (the green play arrow with the small gauge next to it) rather than the standard spacebar play button.

Step 3: Set Up a Keyboard Shortcut for Faster Editing

Clicking the toolbar button repeatedly slows down editing. You can assign a custom keyboard shortcut to trigger fast playback instantly:

  1. Navigate to Edit > Preferences (or press Ctrl + P on Windows / Cmd + , on Mac).
  2. Select Keyboard from the left-hand menu.
  3. In the search box, type Play at Speed.
  4. Select the command, click the shortcut input box, and press your desired key combination (for example, Shift + Space).
  5. Click Set, then click OK to save.

Step 4: Use Timeline Scrubbing for Rapid Spot-Checking

If you need to quickly scan through a specific section of your podcast:

  1. Hover your cursor over the timeline ruler at the top of the track.
  2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag across the timeline to scrub forward or backward.
  3. Dragging further away from the playhead increases the scrub speed, allowing dynamic scanning of pauses or loud background noises.

Important Distinction: Playback Speed vs. Audio Effects

Do not use the Change Speed or Change Tempo options under the Effect menu to review your audio. Those effects permanently process and alter the audio data in your tracks. The Play-at-Speed toolbar is purely a monitoring tool that leaves your final exported podcast audio completely untouched at standard 1.0x speed.
