Remove Mic Rumble in Audacity with High-Pass Filter
Unwanted low-frequency noise, such as microphone handling rumble, desk vibrations, and air conditioner thuds, can significantly degrade the quality of your audio recordings. This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to use the built-in High-Pass Filter in Audacity to cut out these problematic low frequencies while preserving the clarity and natural tone of your voice.
Step 1: Select the Audio Track
Open your project in Audacity. Select the section of audio that contains the handling rumble. If you want to clean the entire track, click on the track's control panel on the left side, or press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (Mac) to select all audio.
Step 2: Open the High-Pass Filter
- Click on the Effect menu at the top of the window.
- Hover over EQ and Filters (in Audacity version 3.2 and newer) and select High-Pass Filter. In older versions of Audacity, High-Pass Filter can be found directly inside the main Effect drop-down list.

- A setting of 12 dB or 24 dB per octave is usually ideal for handling rumble, providing a clean, steep drop-off that silences low-end vibrations without creating sudden audio phase artifacts.
Step 4: Preview and Apply
- Click the Preview button in the lower-left corner of the High-Pass Filter window to hear how the changes affect your audio.
- If you still hear bass-heavy thumps or rumble, raise the cutoff frequency slightly (e.g., from 80 Hz to 100 Hz).
- Once the rumble is eliminated and the speech remains natural, click Apply.
Your selected audio will now be processed, permanently stripping away the low-end handling noise from the recording.
