Remove Car Horn Audio with Audacity Spectral Editing

Audacity’s spectral editing tools allow you to visualize sound frequencies to isolate and eliminate harsh, intrusive noises without destroying the underlying vocal track. This guide explains how to switch to the Spectrogram view, identify the distinct frequency bands of a car horn, define the exact problem area, and apply spectral filters to erase the noise cleanly while preserving voice clarity.

Step 1: Switch to the Spectrogram View

By default, Audacity displays audio as a standard waveform, which only shows amplitude over time. To target specific frequencies, you must switch to the Spectrogram.

  1. Open your project containing the voice recording.
  2. Locate the track control panel on the left side of the audio track.
  3. Click the track name to open the drop-down menu.
  4. Select Spectrogram.

Your audio track will now display a heat map. Time runs along the horizontal axis, frequency runs vertically (low pitch at the bottom, high pitch at the top), and volume is indicated by color brightness.

Step 2: Locate the Car Horn

Because car horns produce loud, sustained, and harmonically rich tones, they are easy to spot visually.

  1. Play the section of the audio where the horn occurs.
  2. Look for bright, solid horizontal lines running through the audio. A car horn typically consists of a fundamental frequency (often between 300 Hz and 500 Hz) along with one or more prominent horizontal harmonics stacked evenly above it (between 1 kHz and 4 kHz).
  3. Zoom in horizontally using Ctrl + 1 (or Cmd + 1 on Mac) to focus on the exact duration of the horn.

Step 3: Make a Spectral Selection

Spectral selection allows you to select both a window of time and a specific range of frequencies.

  1. Ensure the Selection Tool (keyboard shortcut F1) is active.
  2. Click and drag horizontally across the time segment where the horn sound exists.
  3. Move your cursor near the center horizontal frequency line of the horn until the cursor changes to an up-and-down arrow.
  4. Click and drag vertically to adjust the top and bottom frequency boundaries so that the box tightly encloses the bright frequency band of the horn.

Step 4: Apply the Spectral Filter

Audacity provides built-in spectral edit effects to attenuate or remove the selected frequency band.

  1. Go to the top menu and select Effect > Spectral tools.
  2. Choose one of the following methods depending on the severity of the horn:
    • Spectral Delete: Completely removes the selected frequency band. This is the fastest way to eliminate loud, sharp horn bursts.
    • Spectral Edit Parametric EQ: Allows you to reduce the gain of the selected frequency without fully deleting it. This is ideal if the car horn overlaps directly with the primary frequencies of the voice, as it creates a more natural-sounding result.
  3. If the car horn has multiple visible harmonic layers, repeat this selection and removal process for each horizontal band from the lowest harmonic to the highest.

Step 5: Preview and Fine-Tune

  1. Press the Spacebar to listen to the edited section.
  2. Check whether the voice sounds hollow or robotic. If removing the horn scooped out too much vocal presence, press Ctrl + Z (Cmd + Z on Mac) to undo.
  3. Re-select the area with narrower vertical frequency boundaries or switch from Spectral Delete to Spectral Edit Parametric EQ to apply a milder reduction.
