How to Use the Vocoder in Audacity

- The Modulator: This is typically a dynamic, articulate sound such as a spoken or sung vocal track. It acts as the filter, dictating the phrasing, rhythm, and consonant shapes.
- The Carrier: This is a harmonically rich sound with continuous frequency content, such as a synthesizer chord, a saw-wave tone, or white noise. It provides the pitch, tone, and musical timbre.
When processed, the vocoder analyzes the spectral envelope of the modulator through a bank of band-pass filters and uses those levels to shape the carrier. The result is an instrument that appears to "speak" or "sing."
How to Route Carrier and Modulator Signals in Audacity
Audacity's built-in Vocoder effect does not use sidechain routing like standard digital audio workstations (DAWs). Instead, it processes a single stereo track, where one channel serves as the carrier and the other serves as the modulator. By default, Audacity expects the Left channel to be the Carrier and the Right channel to be the Modulator.
Follow these steps to route and combine your tracks:
Step 1: Prepare Two Mono Tracks
- Import or record your carrier signal (synthesizer, sustained pad, or noise) on one track.
- Import or record your modulator signal (vocal speech or singing) on a second track.
- Ensure both tracks are set to Mono. If a track is in stereo, go to Tracks > Mix > Mix Stereo Down to Mono.
Step 2: Arrange the Track Order
- Place the Carrier track directly above the Modulator track in the timeline.
- Align the timing of both tracks so the carrier plays continuously across the duration of the vocal track.
Step 3: Combine Tracks into a Single Stereo Track
- Click the downward-pointing arrow next to the track name on the top track (the Carrier) to open its track control menu.
- Select Make Stereo Track.
- Audacity will merge the two mono tracks into a single stereo track. The top track (Carrier) automatically becomes the Left Channel, and the bottom track (Modulator) becomes the Right Channel.
