How to Use Sync-Lock Tracks in Audacity

Sync-Lock Tracks is a powerful feature in Audacity that ensures multiple audio tracks remain aligned when you cut, delete, paste, or shift audio. When editing complex projects featuring separate tracks for spoken narration, background music, and sound effects, standard editing can cause one track to fall out of time with the rest. This guide explains how to enable and use Sync-Lock Tracks to automatically maintain project timing across your entire mix during the editing process.

What Sync-Lock Does

When Sync-Lock is disabled, deleting a section of audio on your narration track shifts only that track's remaining audio to the left, causing it to fall out of sync with your background music. When Sync-Lock is enabled, Audacity treats your tracks as a synchronized group. Any time-altering edit—such as cutting, inserting silence, or deleting a selection—applied to one track automatically shifts the corresponding time region on all sync-locked tracks.

Step 1: Set Up Your Tracks

  1. Open Audacity and import your voiceover or narration onto one track.
  2. Import or record your background music or ambient audio onto a second track.
  3. Align the tracks manually so the music starts and dips where desired relative to the voice track.

Step 2: Enable Sync-Lock Tracks

  1. Go to the top menu bar and click on Tracks.
  2. Select Sync-Lock Tracks from the dropdown menu (or click the Sync-Lock icon in the toolbar, which resembles a clock face next to small lines).
  3. Once activated, a small clock icon will appear in the Track Control Panel on the left side of every linked track. You will also see a grid pattern in the empty spaces of the tracks to visually indicate they are locked together.

Step 3: Edit Your Narration

  1. Use the Selection Tool (F1) to highlight an unwanted section of your narration (such as a stumble, cough, or long pause).
  2. Notice that while your cursor selection highlights the wave on the narration track, the locked music track below will show a patterned selection box spanning the exact same time range.
  3. Press Delete or choose Edit > Cut (Ctrl + X on Windows, Cmd + X on Mac).
  4. Audacity will remove the selected narration and instantly pull the remaining narration forward, while simultaneously cutting the identical amount of time from the background music. Both tracks stay locked in their relative positions.

Step 4: Paste or Insert Audio

If you need to add room tone, insert silence, or paste a new sentence into your narration:

  1. Place your cursor at the insertion point on the narration track.
  2. Select Generate > Silence or paste copied audio (Ctrl + V / Cmd + V).
  3. Audacity will shift the narration to the right to make room, while automatically moving the background music track forward by the exact same duration.

Step 5: Disable Sync-Lock for Independent Edits

When you need to adjust music independently—such as trimming the tail end of a song, creating fades, or nudging the track with the Time Shift tool—turn Sync-Lock off:

  1. Click Tracks in the top menu.
  2. Click Sync-Lock Tracks to uncheck it.
  3. Perform your music-specific adjustments, then re-enable Sync-Lock to resume editing your dialogue.
