How to Use Bidirectional Scrubbing in Audacity

Audio scrubbing is a specialized playback technique that allows editors to pinpoint specific sections of a recording quickly and accurately. What is Audio Scrubbing?

Audio scrubbing is the process of rapidly playing an audio track forward or backward at varying speeds by moving a cursor or playhead across the timeline. Derived from traditional reel-to-reel tape editing—where an editor would manually move the tape reels back and forth across the playback head—scrubbing allows you to hear the audio change in real time relative to your cursor movement. This makes it easy to identify transient markers, breaths, clicks, word boundaries, or silence without listening to the entire track at standard playback speed.

What is Bidirectional Scrubbing?

Standard playback only moves in one direction: forward at 1.0x speed. Bidirectional scrubbing allows playback to move both forward and in reverse dynamically, based on your input:

• Moving to the right scrubs forward through the track.
• Moving to the left scrubs backward (in reverse) through the track.
• Distance from the center controls playback speed: the further you move the mouse pointer from the scrub marker, the faster the playback speed. Moving the mouse back to the center stops playback.

How to Activate Bidirectional Scrubbing in Audacity

Audacity provides scrubbing functionality directly beneath the Timeline via the Scrub Ruler. Follow these steps to activate and use bidirectional scrubbing:

Step 1: Reveal the Scrub Ruler

1. Open your project in Audacity with an active audio track.
2. If the Scrub Ruler is not visible below the standard timeline, right-click anywhere on the Timeline (the bar displaying minutes and seconds at the top of the track view).
3. Ensure that Scrub Ruler is checked in the context menu. (A secondary horizontal bar will appear immediately below the timeline).

Step 2: Enable Scrubbing Mode

1. Hover your mouse cursor over the Scrub Ruler. The cursor will change to a scrub icon (a small double-ended arrow with play heads).
2. Click directly on the Scrub Ruler where you want playback to begin. A green or red playback line (the scrub marker) will appear, anchored to your cursor.

Step 3: Scrub Bidirectionally

1. Move the mouse to the right of the anchor point to play the audio forward.
2. Move the mouse to the left of the anchor point to play the audio in reverse.
3. Increase the distance between the cursor and the anchor point to increase playback speed (up to maximum preset limits).
4. Return the mouse to the anchor point to pause playback.

Step 4: Stop Scrubbing

To exit scrubbing mode, click anywhere outside the Scrub Ruler or press the Spacebar on your keyboard to stop playback completely.
