How to Swap Left and Right Channels in Audacity

Swapping the left and right audio channels in a stereo recording using Audacity is a straightforward process that involves splitting the stereo track into distinct channels, reversing their orientation, and recombining them into a single stereo track. This guide covers the exact steps required to invert your stereo audio channels quickly and without any loss in audio quality.

Step 1: Open the Audio File

Launch Audacity and open your stereo audio file by dragging it into the window or by selecting File > Open. Ensure the track is a stereo recording, indicated by two distinct waveforms stacked within a single track block.

Step 2: Split the Stereo Track

1. Navigate to the Track Control Panel located to the left of the audio waveform.
2. Click the track name or the downward-facing arrow at the top of the panel to open the track drop-down menu.
3. Select Split Stereo Track.

The single stereo track will now split into two separate tracks: the top track designated for the left channel and the bottom track designated for the right channel.

Step 3: Reassign the Audio Channels

1. Click the drop-down menu on the top track and select Right Channel.
2. Click the drop-down menu on the bottom track and select Left Channel.
