How to Split Stereo Track to Mono in Audacity

Splitting a stereo track into two independent mono tracks in Audacity allows you to edit the left and right audio channels separately, apply unique effects to each channel, or eliminate an unwanted channel entirely. This guide outlines the exact, step-by-step process to separate a stereo waveform into two distinct mono tracks with centered panning.

Step 1: Open Your Project

Launch Audacity and import or open the stereo audio file you want to edit. A standard stereo track displays two waveforms (the left channel on top and the right channel on the bottom) enclosed within a single track block.

Step 2: Open the Track Dropdown Menu

Locate the Track Control Panel on the far left side of the track window. Click the downward-pointing arrow next to the track name (or right-click the track name directly) to open the context menu.

Step 3: Choose "Split Stereo to Mono"

From the dropdown menu, select Split Stereo to Mono.

Note: You will also see an option labeled Split Stereo Track. Choosing "Split Stereo Track" separates the channels but leaves their panning locked hard to the left and right.
