How to Snap to Seconds or Samples in Audacity

Snapping selections in Audacity allows you to lock your cursor and selection boundaries to precise intervals, eliminating guesswork during audio editing. By configuring Audacity’s Time Toolbar and Selection Toolbar, you can force selections to align perfectly to the nearest whole second or down to the individual sample. This guide covers how to enable snapping, choose your desired time format, and ensure your audio cuts are frame-accurate.

Step 1: Enable the Snapping Feature

To begin snapping your selections, you must activate the snap mode in Audacity's interface:

  1. Locate the Selection Toolbar, which is typically docked at the bottom of the main Audacity window. (If it is missing, enable it by going to View > Toolbars > Selection Toolbar).
  2. Find the Snap option.
  3. Click the dropdown menu and change it from Off to Nearest. Selecting "Nearest" ensures that your selection edges automatically jump to the closest unit you define. Alternatively, choosing Prior will snap strictly backward to the preceding unit.

Step 2: Set the Format to Seconds

If you want your selections to snap strictly to full seconds:

  1. Look at the numeric displays in the Selection Toolbar (such as Selection Start or Start and End of Selection).
  2. Click the dropdown arrow next to the time display, or right-click directly on the numbers.
  3. Choose a format based on seconds. For whole seconds, select hh:mm:ss or seconds.
  4. Click and drag anywhere on your audio track. Your selection boundaries will now jump in one-second increments.

Step 3: Set the Format to Samples

For sample-accurate editing, such as aligning phase or zero-crossing points:

  1. Go back to the time display in the Selection Toolbar.
  2. Click the format dropdown menu or right-click the numbers.
  3. Select samples from the list of available formats.
  4. Zoom in closely on your waveform using Ctrl + 1 (or Cmd + 1 on macOS).
  5. Click and drag your cursor. The selection points will now snap directly to individual digital audio samples based on your project's sample rate (e.g., 44,100 or 48,000 samples per second).

Disabling Snapping

If you need to make freeform selections without locking to a grid, open the Snap dropdown in the Selection Toolbar and set it back to Off. Alternatively, holding down the Shift key while dragging a selection will temporarily bypass snapping in most versions of Audacity.
