How to Simulate Small Room Acoustics in Audacity
Simulating small room acoustics in Audacity involves using built-in equalization and reverb effects to transform dry, direct dialogue into sound that feels naturally situated in an intimate, treated space. By controlling room size, early reflections, decay times, and high-frequency absorption, you can prevent your podcast dialogue from sounding sterile while maintaining vocal clarity.
1. Prepare Your Dialogue Track
Start with a clean, dry recording with minimal background noise.
- Select your entire dialogue track by pressing
Ctrl + A(Windows) orCmd + A(Mac). - Ensure the track is mono. Most podcast speech is captured and processed in mono to maintain a consistent center image.
2. Apply the Reverb Effect
Audacity's native Reverb plugin allows you to shape acoustic boundaries accurately.
Go to Effect > Delay and Reverb > Reverb.
Adjust the sliders using the following targets for a small, treated podcast room:
- Room Size (%): Set between 10% and 25%. A low value mimics walls that are close to the microphone.

- Wet Gain (dB): Set between -18 dB and -26 dB. The wet signal must remain subtle; you only want a hint of reflection beneath the primary voice.
- Dry Gain (dB): Keep at 0 dB to ensure the original recording stays prominent.
- Stereo Width (%): If working on a stereo track, set this to 0% – 30% to keep reflections centered and intimate.
Click Preview to audition the sound, then click Apply once the balance is natural.
3. Tame Reflections with Equalization
Natural rooms rarely reflect high and low frequencies evenly. Fine-tuning the frequency response ensures the room sound blends seamlessly:
- Select the track and open Effect > EQ and Filters > Filter Curve EQ.
- Apply a gentle high-shelf cut starting around 5 kHz to 8 kHz, dropping by 1.5 dB to 3 dB. This simulates air absorption and wall dampening.
- Check the 250 Hz to 500 Hz range. If the voice begins to sound boxy after applying reverb, create a gentle dip of 1 dB to 2 dB in this zone to clear up the midrange.
- Click Apply.
4. Fine-Tune with A/B Testing
To ensure the effect does not distract listeners:
- Use the Undo (
