How to Set Microphone Gain in Audacity
Setting your microphone gain correctly before recording in Audacity prevents harsh digital distortion and keeps background noise to a minimum. The industry best practice is to monitor your input levels during a test read and adjust your hardware or software gain so your loudest peaks consistently hit between -18 dB and -6 dB, targeting a sweet spot of roughly -12 dB. This practice provides sufficient signal strength while leaving safe headroom to prevent unexpected audio clipping.
1. Enable Meter Monitoring in Audacity
Before adjusting any levels, you must see your live input volume:
- Locate the Recording Meter toolbar (the meter with the microphone icon).
- Click inside the meter or click the microphone icon and select Start Monitoring.
- The meter will now display live audio levels in real time without creating a recording track.
2. Set Your Physical Hardware Gain First
If you use an audio interface, mixer, or a USB microphone with a built-in gain knob, adjust this physical control before touching the software settings.
- Keep the Recording Volume slider in Audacity at
1.0(100%) to avoid digital attenuation. - Speak into the microphone at your planned recording distance (typically 4 to 6 inches away).
- Turn the hardware gain knob up until your voice registers clearly on the meter.
3. Perform a Realistic Sound Check
Do not simply say "testing." Perform a realistic rehearsal of the loudest parts of your performance:
- Read your actual script or perform with the exact energy, projection, and distance you plan to use during the real take.
- Laugh, shout, or emphasize words if your recording will include those dynamics.
4. Aim for the Optimal Target Range (-18 dB to -6 dB)
Watch the green-to-red recording meter bar during your test:
- Normal speech: Should fluctuate between -18 dB and -12 dB.
- Loudest peaks: Should never exceed -6 dB.
- Avoid the Red Zone: Never let the meter touch 0 dB. Reaching 0 dB causes digital clipping, which permanently ruins the audio waveform with irreversible distortion.
5. Check the Noise Floor
Stop speaking, remain completely still, and observe the meter:
- In a quiet recording environment, the ambient room sound (the noise floor) should drop below -60 dB, or at least remain below -50 dB.
- If the noise floor sits significantly higher, move closer to the microphone, lower the gain slightly, or address background noise sources like computer fans and room reflections.
Once your peaks sit reliably around -12 dB and your noise floor is well below the signal, you have established proper gain staging and are ready to click the record button.
