How to Normalize Audio to a Specific dB in Audacity
Normalizing audio in Audacity allows you to adjust the overall amplitude of a recording to reach a consistent target volume without introducing distortion or clipping. This guide explains how to use Audacity’s built-in normalization tool to set a precise peak decibel (dB) level, ensuring your audio meets standard delivery requirements for podcasts, streaming platforms, or broadcast media.
Step 1: Open and Select Your Audio
- Launch Audacity and load the audio project or file you want to adjust.
- Select the portion of the audio track you wish to normalize. To select the entire project, press Ctrl + A (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + A (macOS).
Step 2: Open the Normalize Effect
- Navigate to the top menu bar and click Effect.
- Depending on your version of Audacity:
- Audacity 3.2 and newer: Hover over Volume and Compression and select Normalize.
- Audacity 3.1 and older: Select Normalize directly from the main Effect drop-down list.

- Normalize stereo channels independently: Leave this unchecked if you want to maintain the current stereo balance (panning) between the left and right channels. Check it only if you want both the left and right channels normalized to the target peak independently.
Step 4: Apply and Confirm
- Click Apply (or OK). Audacity will calculate the difference between your audio's current highest peak and your specified target, adjusting the entire selected track by that amount.
- Review the resulting waveform to ensure the peaks align with your target, and playback the audio while monitoring the playback meter to verify the level.
