How to Join Audio Clips in Audacity

When editing tracks in Audacity, splitting audio is often necessary to cut out unwanted sounds or rearrange sections. However, working with multiple fragmented pieces can become unwieldy, making it necessary to combine them back into a single unit. This guide explains how to join adjacent audio clips in Audacity back together using simple menu commands, keyboard shortcuts, and direct mouse clicks.

Method 1: Click the Split Line

The fastest way to join two touching clips in modern versions of Audacity is directly on the waveform.

  1. Locate the vertical black line dividing the two adjacent clips.
  2. Hover your mouse cursor over the line.
  3. Click the line once. The seam will disappear, merging the two adjacent segments into a single continuous clip.

Note: This method only works if the two clips are touching with no gap between them and originated from the same continuous audio stream.

Method 2: Use the Join Menu Command or Shortcut

If you have multiple split lines across a track, you can merge them all at once.

  1. Select the Selection Tool from the toolbar (or press F1).
  2. Click and drag your cursor across the boundary of the adjacent clips to highlight the section where they meet. To join an entire track, double-click the track or press Ctrl + A (Windows) / Cmd + A (Mac) to select all.
  3. Open the top menu and navigate to Edit > Audio Clips > Join (in older versions, this is located under Edit > Clip Boundaries > Join).
  4. Alternatively, press the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + J on Windows/Linux or Cmd + J on Mac.

All selected boundaries within the highlighted region will merge into a single clip.

Method 3: Mix and Render (For Clips with Gaps)

If there is empty space between your clips that you want to preserve as silence within a single unified clip, use the Mix and Render function:

  1. Select the track containing the separated clips by clicking on its track control panel (the gray box on the left).
  2. Navigate to Tracks > Mix > Mix and Render.
  3. Audacity will bake the clips and the empty spaces between them into one continuous audio track.
