How to Hot-Plug a USB Microphone in Audacity

USB microphones can be connected and recognized without restarting Audacity by utilizing the software's built-in audio device rescanning feature. While Audacity does not always refresh its input list automatically the moment a device is inserted, users do not need to save, close, and reopen the application. A simple command forces Audacity to detect newly connected hardware immediately without interrupting an ongoing session.

Using the Rescan Audio Devices Feature

To recognize a newly plugged-in USB microphone while keeping Audacity open:

Connect the USB microphone to your computer's USB port and allow the operating system a few seconds to initialize the hardware.
In Audacity, click on the Transport menu in the top navigation bar.
Select Rescan Audio Devices (or press the keyboard shortcut Shift + F5).

Audacity will momentarily poll the system for all connected input and output devices.

Selecting the New Microphone
