How to Generate Exact Silence in Audacity

Generating absolute silence of a specific duration in Audacity is a straightforward process achieved using the software's built-in generator tools. This guide explains how to insert digital zero-amplitude silence into an existing track, create a brand-new silent track, and configure the time format to ensure the duration is accurate down to the millisecond or sample.

Step 1: Position the Cursor or Select a Region

Before opening the generator, decide where the silence should go:

To insert silence into an existing track: Click the point on the track timeline where the silence should begin.
To create a new silent track: Click an empty space in the project window (or go to Tracks > Add New > Mono Track or Stereo Track).
To replace existing audio with silence of the exact same length: Click and drag to highlight the specific section of audio you want to overwrite.

Step 2: Open the Silence Generator

Navigate to the top menu bar.
Click Generate.
Select Silence... from the drop-down list.

Step 3: Set the Exact Duration

A dialog box labeled "Silence Generator" will appear with a duration counter.

Choose your preferred time format by clicking the small downward arrow next to the duration numbers. For high precision, select hh:mm:ss + milliseconds or samples.
Highlight each segment of the time counter and type the exact values for the desired length (for example, 00 h 00 m 05.500 s for exactly five and a half seconds).
If you pre-selected a region of audio in Step 1, the box will automatically display that region's exact length. You can leave it as is to silence the selection, or manually alter it.

Step 4: Apply the Silence

Click the Generate (or OK) button.

Audacity will instantly insert a perfectly flat line into your project. This represents true digital silence (\(-\infty\text{ dB}\) or absolute zero amplitude), containing no background noise, dither, or room tone.
