How to Generate DTMF Dial Tones in Audacity
Audacity features a built-in tool for creating Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) signals, which are the familiar sounds produced when pressing the keys on a classic touch-tone telephone. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to locate the DTMF generator in Audacity, input phone numbers or specific sequences, adjust the signal duration, and produce realistic telephone audio for your multimedia projects.
Step 1: Open a Project
Launch Audacity on your computer. You can generate tones directly into a blank workspace or create a new audio track first by going to Tracks > Add New > Mono Track (or Stereo Track). If no track is present, Audacity will automatically create one when the tone is generated.
Step 2: Open the DTMF Tones Generator
- Click on the Generate menu located in the top navigation bar.
- Select DTMF Tones... from the drop-down list. A configuration dialog window will appear.
Step 3: Input the Dial Sequence

- Duration: Set the total length of the sequence. Audacity allows you to specify the duration using hours, minutes, seconds, or milliseconds. Ensure the overall length provides enough time for each digit to sound naturally without cutting off the sequence.
Step 5: Render and Export
- Click Preview to hear how the tones sound before placing them into your timeline.
- Click OK to generate the audio waveforms onto your selected track.
- To save your tones as a standalone audio file, go to File > Export and choose your preferred audio format, such as WAV or MP3.
