How to Fix Tape Dropouts in Audacity
Tape dropouts occur when degraded or damaged magnetic tape causes sudden, brief dips in volume or high-frequency loss during playback. In Audacity, you can effectively repair these volume dips using built-in features such as the Envelope Tool, the Amplify effect, and channel copying. This guide walks you through the fastest, most effective methods to restore consistent audio levels across damaged sections of your recording.
Method 1: Using the Envelope Tool (Recommended for Smooth Transitions)
The Envelope Tool provides granular control over volume automation, allowing you to manually boost dipped sections without creating abrupt, unnatural edges.
- Zoom In: Press
Ctrl + 1(Windows) orCmd + 1(Mac) to zoom closely into the dropout area until you can clearly see the volume reduction in the waveform. - Select the Envelope Tool: Click the
Envelope Tool icon in the toolbar (or press
F2). - Add Control Points:
- Click the waveform just before the volume dip begins to create an anchor point.
- Click just after the volume dip ends to create a second anchor point.
- Click within the dip itself to create points where the volume needs boosting.
- Adjust the Volume: Click and drag the inner control points upward to raise the volume until the waveform matches the amplitude of the surrounding healthy audio.
- Listen and Fine-tune: Switch back to the
Selection Tool (
F1) and play through the section to ensure the transition sounds natural.

- Highlight the Dropout: Use the Selection Tool to highlight the exact section where the volume drops.
- Measure Surrounding Peak Levels: Note the approximate peak height of the healthy audio directly adjacent to the selection.
- Open Amplify: Go to Effect > Volume and Compression > Amplify.
- Apply Gain: Enter a positive value in the Amplification (dB) field to raise the level to match the adjacent audio. Ensure Allow clipping is unchecked unless you are certain the peaks will not exceed 0 dB.
- Smooth the Edges: Sudden amplification can produce audible clicks at the boundaries. If clicks occur, highlight a few milliseconds across each boundary and apply Effect > Fading > Crossfade Clips or Studio Fade Out / Studio Fade In.
Method 3: Fixing Single-Channel Dropouts (Stereo Recordings)

- Copy the Clean Channel:
- Select the clean segment on the intact channel.

- Rejoin Tracks: Click the upper track’s dropdown menu and select Make Stereo Track to combine them back into a single stereo file.

- Highlight the repaired section.
- Go to Effect > EQ and Filters > Graphic EQ.
