How to Export Selected Audio in Audacity

Audacity allows you to save a specific portion of your project rather than the entire timeline. This guide provides a straightforward, step-by-step walkthrough on how to highlight a specific audio region and export only that selection into your preferred audio format, such as MP3, WAV, or AAC.

Step 1: Select the Audio Region

1. Open your project in Audacity.
2. Select the Selection Tool from the toolbar (or press F1).
3. Click and drag your cursor over the specific section of the audio track you wish to save. The selected area will appear highlighted with a darker background.
4. Press the Spacebar to playback and confirm that you have selected the exact section you need.

Step 2: Open the Export Menu

Depending on the version of Audacity you are using, the export command differs slightly:

• Audacity 3.4 and Newer:

  1. Click File in the top menu bar.
  2. Navigate to Export Audio...
  3. In the export dialog window, look for the Export Range section and select the radio button for Current Selection.
