How to Export Multichannel Audio from Audacity
Exporting a multichannel surround audio file from Audacity can lead to unexpected results if the software is left at its default configuration. By default, Audacity automatically downmixes all project tracks into a standard stereo or mono file during export, stripping away spatial positioning. This article explains what happens during this default export process, why it occurs, and how to configure Audacity to preserve discrete surround sound channels.
When you attempt to export a project containing more than two audio tracks—such as a 5.1 or 7.1 surround configuration—without adjusting Audacity’s internal settings, the software initiates an automatic stereo downmix. A prompt will typically appear warning you that the tracks will be mixed down and exported as one stereo file. If you proceed, Audacity combines every active track into left and right channels based on their pan positions. This results in the complete loss of your discrete surround channels (such as center, LFE/subwoofer, and surround speakers), effectively flattening the audio into a two-channel file.
This behavior occurs because Audacity defaults to standard two-channel output to prevent compatibility issues with common playback systems. To bypass this automatic downmix, you must enable the software's advanced routing features prior to exporting.
To preserve your surround channels, navigate to Edit > Preferences (or Audacity > Preferences on macOS), select the Import / Export category, and choose Use custom mix (labeled as Use advanced mixing options in some versions).
Once this setting is active, selecting an export option will open the Advanced Mixing Options dialog box before the file is rendered. This interface allows you to:
- Specify Output Channels: Set the total number of output channels to match your surround format (e.g., 6 channels for 5.1 surround or 8 channels for 7.1 surround).
- Map Tracks Directly: Manually map each project track to its corresponding output channel by clicking the connection grid. This ensures that specific audio stems, like the center channel or low-frequency effects, are routed to their designated positions rather than being blended into the front channels.
Additionally, file format compatibility plays a critical role in multichannel export. Formats such as standard MP3 do not support multichannel audio and will fail to output surround sound. To retain discrete channels, you must export your project in a format that natively supports multichannel streams, such as WAV, AIFF, FLAC, or Ogg Vorbis. If the correct format is selected and the custom mix matrix is properly routed, Audacity will successfully generate a true multichannel surround audio file.
