How to Customize and Dock Toolbars in Audacity

Audacity allows users to completely personalize their workspace by rearranging, docking, floating, resizing, and toggling different toolbars. Whether you want to optimize screen real estate for multi-track editing or place essential controls within immediate reach, Audacity’s interface can be tailored to suit any audio production workflow and restored to its default state at any time.

Showing and Hiding Toolbars

You can choose which toolbars are visible to reduce clutter and focus only on the tools you need.

  1. Click on the View menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Hover over Toolbars.
  3. Click on any toolbar name (such as Transport Toolbar, Tools Toolbar, Edit Toolbar, or Meter Toolbars) to check or uncheck it. Checked items are visible on the interface; unchecked items are hidden.

Undocking and Floating Toolbars

Any toolbar can be detached from the main interface dock and placed anywhere on your screen as a free-floating window.

  1. Locate the grabber handle on the far left edge of any docked toolbar (it looks like a textured or serrated vertical strip).
  2. Click and hold the grabber handle.
  3. Drag the toolbar away from the docking area into the main project window or onto a secondary monitor.
  4. Release the mouse button. The toolbar is now floating and will display its own title bar.

Moving and Docking Toolbars

Floating or docked toolbars can be placed into the upper or lower dock areas of the Audacity window.

  1. Click and hold the title bar of a floating toolbar, or the grabber handle of an already docked toolbar.
  2. Drag the toolbar toward the top docking area (under the menu bar) or the bottom docking area (above the status bar).
  3. Watch for a visual drop indicator to appear, signaling an available docking slot.
  4. Release the mouse button to snap the toolbar into the dock. You can place toolbars side-by-side or stack them into new rows.

Resizing Toolbars

Certain toolbars, particularly the Recording Meter and Playback Meter, can be resized to provide larger, more precise visual feedback.

  1. Move your cursor to the edge or corner of a toolbar until the pointer changes into a double-sided arrow.
  2. Click and drag outward to expand the toolbar horizontally or vertically.
  3. Release the mouse button when it reaches your desired size.

Resetting Toolbars to Default

If your workspace becomes cluttered or you accidentally misplace a floating toolbar off-screen, you can instantly restore the default arrangement.

  1. Click the View menu.
  2. Select Toolbars.
  3. Click Reset Toolbars. All toolbars will return to their factory-default positions, sizes, and visibility settings.
