How to Create Mono or Stereo Tracks in Audacity

Adding new audio tracks manually in Audacity allows you to organize your recordings, layer instruments, or set up multi-track projects before you begin capturing sound. How to Create a Mono Track

A mono track consists of a single audio channel, making it ideal for standard voiceovers, solo podcasts, and single-microphone recordings.

1. Open your project in Audacity.
2. Click on the Tracks menu located in the top menu bar.
3. Hover over Add New.
4. Select Mono Track from the drop-down submenu.

An empty mono track will appear at the bottom of your project timeline, ready for recording or pasting audio clips.

How to Create a Stereo Track

A stereo track consists of two channels—left and right—allowing for spatial audio effects, panning, and music production.

1. Open your project in Audacity.
2. Click on the Tracks menu in the top menu bar.
3. Hover over Add New.
4. Select Stereo Track from the drop-down submenu.

A dual-waveform track will immediately be added to your timeline.

Choosing Between Mono and Stereo

• Select Mono when recording spoken-word audio, acoustic instruments using a single microphone, or when you want to minimize file size without sacrificing vocal clarity.
• Select Stereo when importing pre-mixed music, recording synthesizers with stereo outputs, or capturing environmental ambience with a stereo microphone pair.
