How to Create and Adjust Loop Regions in Audacity

Audacity includes a dedicated loop playback feature that allows you to continuously repeat specific sections of audio seamlessly. This guide covers how to enable the looping tool, define a loop region directly on the timeline, and adjust the boundary markers to fine-tune your playback without altering the underlying audio tracks.

Enabling the Looping Feature

1. Locate the Transport toolbar at the top of the interface.
2. Click the Loop button (represented by two circular arrows) or press L on your keyboard to toggle looping on.
3. Once active, the loop button will remain highlighted, and a loop region ruler will appear directly beneath the timeline ruler.

Creating a Looped Playback Region

There are two primary ways to set a loop region in Audacity:

• From an Existing Selection: Use the Selection Tool to highlight an area of your waveform. With the audio selected, clicking the Loop button or pressing L automatically sets the loop region to match your selected boundaries.
• Directly on the Timeline: Hover your mouse cursor in the upper portion of the Timeline ruler. Click and drag across the ruler to define the start and end points directly. A colored bar with triangular handles at each end will appear to indicate the active loop region.

Adjusting the Loop Region

Once the loop region is created, you can modify its length and position dynamically:

• Changing the Start or End Points: Hover your cursor over either the left or right triangular handle on the loop bar until the cursor turns into a pointing finger. Click and drag the handle left or right to extend or shorten the loop boundary.
• Moving the Entire Region: Hover your cursor over the colored bar between the two boundary handles. When the cursor changes to a hand, click and drag to shift the entire loop region left or right without altering its duration.
• Fine-Tuning with the Selection Toolbar: For precise, sample-accurate adjustments, use the numerical input boxes in the Selection Toolbar at the bottom of the screen to enter exact start and end timestamps.

Playing and Removing the Loop

To preview your loop, press Spacebar or click the Play button while looping is active. Playback will begin at the start marker, jump back to the beginning upon reaching the end marker, and repeat continuously until paused.

To clear or disable the loop region, press L to toggle off loop playback, or right-click anywhere within the timeline ruler and choose Clear Loop.
