How to Combine Mono Tracks to Stereo in Audacity

Combining two mono tracks into a single stereo track in Audacity joins two separate audio streams into a unified, two-channel file. The software designates the upper track as the left channel and the lower track as the right channel, locking their timelines together under a single control panel. This process does not alter the underlying audio data itself, but it significantly changes how the audio is edited, panned, and played back within the project.

Channel Assignment and Spatial Placement

When the "Make Stereo Track" command is executed from the upper track's dropdown menu, Audacity immediately assigns spatial orientation based purely on vertical positioning:

Before the merge, each mono track plays through both speakers equally (centered) unless manually panned. After the merge, all content from the top track routes exclusively to the left speaker, and all content from the bottom track routes exclusively to the right speaker. If the two original recordings are identical, the result is "dual mono," which sounds centered. If they contain different signals (such as a stereo microphone pair or distinct instruments), the result is a true stereo soundstage.

Once combined, the two channels are locked together on the timeline.
