How to Collapse and Expand Tracks in Audacity

Managing large multi-track projects in Audacity can quickly clutter your screen, making it difficult to navigate between recordings. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on how to collapse and expand individual audio tracks using track control buttons, mouse dragging, and menu commands. Method 1: Using the Track Collapse Button

The fastest way to toggle the size of an individual track is by using its built-in collapse button located in the Track Control Panel (the panel to the left of the audio waveform).

  1. Locate the Track Control Panel on the left side of the track you want to minimize.
  2. Look for the small triangle/arrow icon located at the bottom of the Track Control Panel.
  3. Click the triangle icon once to collapse the track. The waveform will minimize into a thin horizontal strip, hiding detailed waveform data but keeping the track active.
  4. Click the triangle icon again to expand the track back to its standard height.

Method 2: Manually Resizing the Track Border

If you want a custom track height rather than fully collapsing it, you can manually resize it using your mouse.

  1. Hover your mouse cursor over the bottom border line of the track you wish to resize.
