How to Clear a Selection in Audacity
When editing in Audacity, it is common to highlight a portion of a track to apply effects or preview playback, only to need that selection removed afterward. This guide explains how to clear an active selection without cutting, deleting, or altering the underlying audio.
1. Use the "Select None" Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest and safest way to deselect audio across all tracks is to use the dedicated shortcut:
- Windows / Linux: Press
Ctrl+Shift+A - macOS: Press
Cmd+Shift+A
This instantly removes the gray highlight across the entire timeline without moving the playhead or modifying any audio data.
2. Use the Top Menu
If you prefer using the graphical menu:
- Click the Select menu in the top menu bar.
- Choose None from the dropdown list.
3. Click Once on the Track
With the Selection Tool active (the
I-beam cursor, shortcut F1):
- Single-click anywhere on the waveform or in the gray background area of the track.
This collapses the highlighted region into a single point (the playback cursor) without deleting any audio. Ensure you only click once rather than clicking and dragging.
4. Collapse the Selection with Arrow Keys
You can also clear a selection using your keyboard's navigation keys:
- Press the Left Arrow key to collapse the selection to the start point.
- Press the Right Arrow key to collapse the selection to the end point.
