How to Carve Vocal Frequencies Using Audacity EQ

Carving out vocal space in a busy instrumental mix prevents masking, ensuring that your lead vocal sits clearly on top without simply turning up its volume. Using Audacity’s built-in equalization tools, you can identify the core frequency range of your vocal track and apply subtle cuts to the corresponding frequencies on the backing track. This step-by-step guide explains how to locate the right frequency pocket, apply cuts using the Filter Curve EQ, and fine-tune your final mix for maximum clarity.

1. Identify the Target Vocal Frequencies

Human vocals generally occupy specific ranges depending on the singer's voice and tone:

In most mixes, the 1 kHz to 3.5 kHz range is where vocals compete most heavily with guitars, synths, and pianos. Carving out a shallow cut in this specific range on the backing track allows the vocal to cut through without sounding harsh.

2. Prepare the Backing Track

  1. Open your project in Audacity containing both the vocal track and the backing track.
  2. Ensure both tracks are aligned properly on the timeline.
  3. Click on the track control panel (the gray area to the left of the waveform) of the backing track to select it. Do not apply these cuts to the vocal track itself.
