How to Apply Track and Master Effects in Audacity

Modern Audacity versions support real-time, non-destructive effects processing that can be applied to individual audio tracks or globally across the master output bus. This guide walks you through setting up per-track effects to shape individual elements and configuring master effects to polish your final mix, all without permanently altering your source audio files.

Understanding Real-Time Effects in Modern Audacity

Earlier versions of Audacity required destructive processing, where applying an effect permanently altered the waveform. Audacity now features a dedicated Realtime Effects system. This allows you to insert, bypass, tweak, and reorder VST3, AU, LV2, and native effects while listening to audio playback in real time.

How to Apply Per-Track Effects

Per-track effects apply only to the audio clip on that designated track, making them ideal for corrective EQ, noise gates, and track-specific compression.

  1. Locate the Track Header: Look at the track control panel on the far left of the track you wish to process.
  2. Open the Effects Panel: Click the Effects button located in the track control panel. This opens the real-time effects sidebar on the left side of the screen.
  3. Add an Effect: Click the Add effect button (or the + icon) in the sidebar.
  4. Choose a Plugin: Browse through the grouped list (built-in effects, VST3, AU, etc.) and select the desired processor.
  5. Tweak the Settings: Click the effect name in the stack to open its graphical interface. Hit the Spacebar to start playback and adjust your parameters live.
  6. Reorder or Bypass:
    • Click the toggle switch next to any effect to mute or unmute it.
    • Drag effects up or down in the stack to change the processing order.

How to Apply Master Output Effects

Master effects apply to the summed stereo output of all unmuted tracks combined. These are best used for global mastering tasks, such as bus compression, stereo widening, and peak limiting.

  1. Open the Realtime Effects Panel: Ensure the Realtime Effects sidebar is visible (if hidden, go to View > Toolbars or click the Effects button on any track).
  2. Switch to the Master Stack: At the top of the Realtime Effects sidebar, click on the Master tab (or select the Master strip).
  3. Add Master Processors: Click Add effect to open the plugin menu and choose your mastering plugins (e.g., a transparent limiter or master EQ).
  4. Adjust While Mixing: Play the entire project to ensure the master effect reacts appropriately to all tracks playing simultaneously.
  5. Manage Headroom: Monitor the primary playback meter to ensure your master effects do not cause digital clipping before export.
