How to Adjust the Pan Slider in Audacity

Adjusting the pan slider in Audacity allows you to position audio tracks anywhere across the stereo field, moving sounds from the left speaker to the right speaker. Locating the Pan Slider

Every audio track in Audacity includes a Track Control Panel on the far left side of the waveform display. Within this panel, you will find two horizontal sliders:

• Gain Slider (Top): Controls the track volume (marked with - and +).
• Pan Slider (Bottom): Controls stereo positioning (marked with L for Left and R for Right).

By default, the pan slider sits directly in the center, meaning the audio is sent equally to both the left and right output channels.

• Mono Tracks: Panning is most effective on mono tracks. Moving the pan slider on a mono track places that single source across the stereo output bus, giving it a distinct location in the listener's environment.
• Stereo Tracks: When applied to a stereo track, the pan slider acts as a balance control rather than a true spatial panner. Moving the slider left reduces the volume of the right channel rather than moving the right channel's content over to the left. To reposition individual elements of a stereo recording, split the stereo track into two separate mono tracks using the track dropdown menu, then pan each track independently.
