How Audacity Multi-Tool Mode Works

The Audacity Multi-Tool mode consolidates five distinct editing functions into a single, context-sensitive interface to streamline your audio workflow. Instead of requiring you to manually switch between individual tools using keyboard shortcuts or the toolbar, the Multi-Tool dynamically adapts its behavior based on the cursor's position on the track and the keyboard modifier keys you hold down.

When hovering within the main body of an audio waveform, the cursor functions as the standard Selection Tool. In this area, clicking sets the playback cursor position, and clicking and dragging highlights a specific region of audio for cutting, copying, or applying effects.

Moving the cursor toward the upper or lower boundary edges of a track automatically changes it into the Envelope Tool. In this position, clicking on the waveform boundary creates control points, allowing you to manipulate the track's volume envelope. You can drag these points up or down to create custom fades, ducking effects, or smooth transitions directly on the track without leaving the editing view.

When you zoom in closely enough to see individual audio samples represented as discrete dots, the Multi-Tool automatically switches to the Draw Tool. This allows you to click and drag individual sample points up or down, making it possible to manually reshape the waveform to repair localized glitches, clicks, or digital clipping.

The Multi-Tool also incorporates navigation and zooming functions through keyboard and mouse combinations. Holding modifier keys (such as Ctrl or Cmd) while using the scroll wheel zooms in and out of the waveform, while right-clicking allows you to quickly zoom out. Additionally, hovering over the clip drag handles enables quick horizontal repositioning of audio segments along the timeline.

By combining selection, volume enveloping, sample-level drawing, and timeline navigation into one responsive cursor, the Multi-Tool eliminates unnecessary tool switching and accelerates repetitive waveform editing tasks.
