Can Audacity Display and Edit MIDI Tracks?
Audacity can import and display standard MIDI files alongside regular audio tracks using specialized "Note Tracks," but its editing capabilities for MIDI data are strictly limited. While Audacity functions as a robust digital audio workstation for recording, mixing, and editing sampled sound, it is not a full-featured MIDI sequencer. Users can align and visually synchronize MIDI data with waveform audio, but detailed note-level composition and manipulation are not supported.
Displaying MIDI Tracks in Audacity
Audacity handles MIDI files (.mid or .midi) by converting them into Note Tracks.
- Importing: You can import a MIDI file by navigating to File > Import > MIDI....
- Visual Layout: Once imported, the MIDI data appears as a distinct track on the timeline alongside your standard mono or stereo audio tracks.
- Display Format: The Note Track visualizes musical notes as horizontal bars across a piano-roll-style grid, showing pitch on the vertical axis and time across the horizontal axis. This allows you to visually match transient peaks in audio tracks with corresponding MIDI notes.
What You Can Edit
Audacity treats Note Tracks primarily as blocks of data on the timeline. Available editing actions include:
- Basic Clipboard Functions: You can select a range of the MIDI track to cut, copy, and paste sections across the timeline.
- Time Alignment: You can use the Time Shift functionality (or drag clips directly in modern versions of Audacity) to align the start and end points of MIDI events with your audio tracks.
- Stretching and Compressing: You can apply tempo adjustments to speed up or slow down the playback of the MIDI track to match the tempo of your recorded audio.
MIDI Limitations in Audacity
Audacity lacks the dedicated MIDI toolset found in traditional digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Reaper, Cubase, or Ableton Live:
- No Note-Level Editing: You cannot click to draw, add, erase, or drag individual notes to change their pitch or duration within the track.
- No Controller Data Editing: There are no tools to adjust velocity, pitch bend, modulation, or aftertouch parameters.
- No Direct MIDI Recording: Audacity cannot record incoming MIDI data from a USB keyboard or MIDI controller; it can only record the rendered audio output of a hardware instrument.
- Playback Configuration: Audacity does not contain built-in virtual instruments (VSTi) to synthesize MIDI by default. Playback relies on your operating system's built-in MIDI synthesizer (such as Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth on Windows) or external software synthesizers.
For projects requiring simple visual alignment or basic block-level cuts of pre-made MIDI files next to audio waveforms, Audacity is sufficient. However, for in-depth MIDI sequencing, note creation, and virtual instrument production, a dedicated DAW or standalone MIDI editor is necessary.
