Audacity Time Track Pitch Bend and Tape Stop Guide

Audacity’s Time Track feature dynamically alters playback speed across an entire project, which simultaneously modulates the pitch of the audio. This capability makes it the premier native tool for creating smooth continuous pitch bends, vinyl slowdowns, and classic tape-stop effects without requiring third-party plugins. This guide details how to add the Time Track, set its parameters, and manipulate control points to create these effects.

Step 1: Add the Time Track to Your Project

  1. Open your audio project in Audacity.
  2. In the top menu, navigate to Tracks > Add New > Time Track.
  3. A new track titled "Time Track" will appear at the very top of your project workspace, featuring a linear graph representing playback speed.

Step 2: Configure the Speed Range

By default, the Time Track is set to a subtle range (often 90% to 110%), which is insufficient for dramatic pitch shifts or tape stops.

  1. Click the drop-down menu on the Time Track control panel (the downward arrow next to the track name).
  2. Select Set Range.
  3. Set the Lower Speed and Upper Speed limits according to the desired effect:
    • For a Tape-Stop Effect: Set the Lower Speed to 0% (or 10% if your version restricts true zero) and the Upper Speed to 100%.
    • For a Pitch-Bend Effect: Set the Lower Speed to 50% (half speed/down an octave) and the Upper Speed to 150% or 200% (double speed/up an octave).
  4. Click OK.

Step 3: Plot the Effect with Envelope Points

The horizontal line across the Time Track represents project speed. Manipulating this line controls speed and pitch variations over time.

  1. Switch to the Envelope Tool by clicking its icon in the toolbar or pressing F2.
  2. Identify the exact moment in your audio track where the effect should begin.
  3. Click the blue line on the Time Track at that position to place an anchor point at 100% (normal speed).
  4. Create a second point at the moment the effect should conclude:
    • To create a tape-stop: Click slightly later in the timeline (typically 0.5 to 1.5 seconds after the first point) and drag the new point straight down to the minimum speed level. The steep downward slope forces the audio to decelerate to a complete halt, mimicking a tape machine powering down.
    • To create a pitch-bend: Click where the bend should reach its peak or trough, then drag the point up or down. Add a subsequent point back at 100% to return the track smoothly to its original pitch and tempo.

Step 4: Preview and Render the Result

  1. Press the Spacebar to listen to the modulation. Adjust the points horizontally to change the duration of the slide, or vertically to adjust the depth of the pitch change.
  2. The Time Track affects all tracks playing simultaneously in the workspace. If you only want the effect applied to a specific segment, mute other tracks or split the target audio onto an isolated section.
  3. To permanently apply the effect, highlight the audio and go to Tracks > Mix > Mix and Render, or simply export the finished project via File > Export Audio.
