Audacity Shortcuts to Start, Pause, and Stop Recording

Using keyboard shortcuts in Audacity significantly speeds up your audio production workflow by eliminating the need to click through toolbar menus. This guide covers the essential default hotkeys required to start, pause, and stop recording sessions seamlessly on both Windows and macOS systems.

Start Recording

Audacity provides two distinct shortcuts to begin recording, depending on whether you want to record onto the active track or create a new one:

• R: Starts recording immediately. By default, this appends new audio to the end of the currently selected track or creates a single new track if your project is empty.
• Shift + R: Starts recording on a brand-new track automatically, leaving your existing tracks untouched.

Pause Recording

Pausing halts the recording process temporarily without finalizing the track segment or moving the playhead to the beginning:

• P: Toggles the pause state. Pressing P while recording freezes the recording process; pressing P again immediately resumes capturing audio where you left off.

Stop Recording

When you are finished capturing your audio take, you can stop the recording completely using either of the following commands:

• Spacebar: The standard shortcut to stop recording (as well as playback).
• X: Stops recording and sets the cursor at the exact current position rather than snapping back to where playback or recording initially began.

Customizing Your Recording Shortcuts

If you prefer different key bindings, you can easily change them within Audacity:

1. Go to Edit > Preferences (or Audacity > Preferences on macOS).
2. Select the Shortcuts category from the left sidebar.
3. Type the command name (such as "Record" or "Pause") into the search bar.
4. Select the command, click into the hotkey field at the bottom, press your desired key combination, and click Set.
