Available Roll-Off Slope Settings
In Audacity’s native High-Pass Filter and Low-Pass Filter tools, the roll-off is measured in decibels per octave (dB per octave). The software provides five discrete slope settings in the drop-down menu:
- 6 dB per octave
- 12 dB per octave
- 24 dB per octave
- 36 dB per octave
- 48 dB per octave
How Roll-Off Slopes Work
An octave represents a doubling or halving of a frequency (for example, moving from 100 Hz to 200 Hz, or from 4 kHz to 2 kHz). The dB rating dictates how much signal volume is attenuated across that octave distance once the audio crosses the designated cutoff frequency.
A lower number creates a gentle, gradual slope, while a higher number creates a steep, aggressive drop-off.
When to Use Each Slope Option
- 6 dB per octave: This provides the most gradual and transparent slope. It produces minimal phase distortion and is best suited for subtle tone balancing, gentle warmth reduction, or air smoothing where a transparent, natural transition is desired.
- 12 dB per octave: Considered the standard, "musical" filter curve. This setting is ideal for vocal tracks to remove low-end rumble or plosives without noticeably altering the natural body of the voice.
- 24 dB per octave: A moderate-to-steep curve that allows for firm frequency control. It is commonly used to clean up low-end mud in multi-track sessions, isolate kick drums, or eliminate specific frequency bands without bleeding excessively into adjacent ranges.
- 36 dB per octave: A sharp slope designed for strict containment. It works well when surgical isolation is needed, such as preventing low bass synths from clashing with sub-bass frequencies.
- 48 dB per octave: The steepest option available in Audacity's default filters. This acts as a near-brickwall barrier, cutting off unwanted frequencies abruptly. It is ideal for creative sound design (such as telephone or radio effects), removing high-frequency hiss, or completely eliminating extreme low-end mechanical hums, though users should listen closely for potential phase artifacts around the cutoff frequency.
