The Envelope Tool in Audacity gives users precise, visual control over manual volume automation throughout an audio track. Instead of applying a uniform volume change to an entire clip, this tool allows you to create adjustable control points directly on the waveform to smoothly fade, duck, or boost amplitude at specific moments. Understanding the Envelope Tool
The Envelope Tool changes how Audacity represents an audio track's volume. Normally, track volume is static unless modified by effects like Amplify or Normalize. When the Envelope Tool is selected—either by clicking its icon in the Tools toolbar (two triangles connected by a line) or by pressing the shortcut F2—a thick blue border and a gray inner boundary appear at the top and bottom of the audio track. These boundaries represent the amplitude limits of the track.
Creating and Adjusting Control Points
Manual volume automation with the Envelope Tool relies on creating "control points" (often called keyframes in other audio software):
- Adding Points: Click anywhere along the upper or lower boundary of a track's waveform. Clicking creates a small white control point.
- Adjusting Amplitude: Click and drag a control point downward to reduce the volume at that specific location, or drag it upward to restore or boost the volume.
- Establishing Segments: A single point changes the
volume of the entire track proportionally. To automate volume in a
specific section, create at least three or four points:
- Two outer "anchor" points to hold the original volume level before and after the change.
- One or two inner "target" points to define the attenuated or boosted level.
- Moving Points: Click and drag any existing point left or right to change its timing along the timeline.
- Removing Points: To delete a control point, click and drag it outside the vertical boundaries of the track lane.

- Audio Ducking: When narrating over background music, place four control points on the music track. Lower the middle two points during spoken sections so the voice remains clear, and let the music swell back to full volume during pauses.
- Manual De-Essing and De-Clicking: Rather than using aggressive dynamic filters, zoom in on harsh sibilants, coughs, or microphone bumps and briefly drop the envelope to attenuate the unwanted noise cleanly.
- Custom Fades: Unlike the automated Fade In or Fade Out effects, the Envelope Tool allows for non-linear, tailored fades that match the natural decay of an instrument or speech pattern.
