The Contrast analysis tool in Audacity evaluates the volume difference between foreground speech and background audio to ensure spoken content remains distinct and intelligible. By comparing the Root Mean Square (RMS) loudness of both elements in decibels (dB), this feature helps audio editors quickly determine whether a mix provides sufficient separation to meet international accessibility standards.
What the Contrast Tool Measures
The tool specifically calculates the difference in average RMS energy levels between two distinct sections of an audio project:
- Foreground Audio: Typically the primary voice track or spoken dialogue.
- Background Audio: Typically ambient music, sound effects, or background noise playing behind or alongside the dialogue.
Rather than looking at instantaneous peak volumes, the tool analyzes the average sustained energy across the selected regions. The resulting calculation is an overall contrast ratio expressed in decibels (dB).
Purpose and Accessibility Standards
The primary function of the Contrast tool is to test audio against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Under WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 1.4.7, audio tracks containing speech must maintain sufficient volume separation from background sounds so that individuals with hearing impairments can understand the spoken content.
When you measure both selections, the Contrast tool compares the foreground-to-background difference against accessibility thresholds:
- Pass Result: The speech is at least 20 dB louder than the background sound, meeting the WCAG Level AAA requirements.
- Fail Result: The difference is less than 20 dB, indicating that background music or noise is loud enough to obscure the speech for some listeners.
Interpreting the Results
If the contrast analysis results in a failure, the background music needs to be attenuated (lowered) or the speech track amplified using standard mixing techniques such as ducking, compression, or simple gain adjustments until the RMS separation reaches at least 20 dB.
