Audacity Cathedral Reverb Settings
Simulating the expansive, resonant acoustics of a large cathedral requires careful configuration of Audacity’s built-in Reverb effect. Cathedrals are defined by massive stone architecture, towering ceilings, and hard surfaces that produce long decay times, high reflections, and pronounced low-end resonance. This guide details the exact parameter settings required to transform dry vocal or instrumental tracks into a cavernous, realistic cathedral space.
Recommended Reverb Parameters
To open the tool, highlight your audio track and navigate to Effect > Delay and Reverb > Reverb. Enter the following values:
- Room Size (%): 100%
This sets the internal dimensions of the virtual room to its maximum capacity, simulating the immense physical volume of a cathedral nave. - Pre-delay (ms): 30 to 50 ms
Pre-delay creates a brief gap between the initial dry sound and the onset of the reverberation. A delay of 30 to 50 milliseconds mimics the time it takes for sound waves to travel to distant stone walls and bounce back. - Reverberance (%): 85% to 90%
Cathedrals are famous for long decay times often lasting several seconds. Setting Reverberance near 90% produces an extended tail that lingers naturally without completely washing out the source audio. - Damping (%): 15% to 20%

Application Tips

- Use Parallel Processing for Clarity: If the high wet level causes speech or intricate instrumentation to lose intelligibility, duplicate the track first (Ctrl + D).
