Align Tracks by Start or End Time in Audacity

Aligning audio tracks in Audacity is a fundamental step for multi-track editing, podcast production, and music mixing. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to synchronize your audio clips by aligning their start times or end times using Audacity's automated alignment features.

Step 1: Select the Tracks You Want to Align

Before applying any alignment command, you must tell Audacity which tracks to modify:

1. Click on the track control panel (the gray area containing the mute/solo buttons) on the first track to select it.
2. Hold down the Shift key (or Ctrl / Cmd) and click the control panels of any additional tracks you wish to include.
3. Alternatively, press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (Mac) to select all tracks in the project.

Step 2: Align Tracks by Start Time

Audacity offers several ways to line up the beginnings of your audio tracks:

• Align All Starts Together: Go to the top menu bar, click Tracks, hover over Align Tracks, and select Align Together. This shifts all selected tracks so that their start times match the start time of the earliest track in your selection.
• Align Starts to the Project Start (0:00): If you want every selected track to begin at the very beginning of the project timeline, navigate to Tracks > Align Tracks > Start to Zero.
• Align Starts to a Specific Point: Click anywhere on the timeline to place your editing cursor at the desired reference point. Then, navigate to Tracks > Align Tracks > Start to Cursor/Selection Start. The start of each selected track will jump directly to your cursor line.

Step 3: Align Tracks by End Time

To make your tracks finish at the exact same moment:

1. Click on the timeline to position the playback cursor where you want the tracks to finish.
2. Ensure the target tracks are selected.
3. Go to the top menu and select Tracks > Align Tracks > End to Cursor/Selection Start.

Audacity will shift each selected track along the timeline so that its final audio sample lines up precisely with the cursor.

Manual Fine-Tuning

If you need minor adjustments after performing an automated alignment, you can drag clips directly on the timeline:

• Hover your mouse over the title bar of an audio clip until the hand icon appears.
• Click and hold, then drag the clip horizontally to the left or right to fine-tune its position. Audacity’s snapping feature will display yellow boundary lines when a clip edges against the start or end of another track.
