Search Files Inside Archives Using 7-Zip GUI
Finding a specific file within a large, multi-folder archive can be
tedious without extracting the entire contents. While the 7-Zip
graphical user interface (GUI) does not include a traditional search bar
or a Ctrl + F find window, you can quickly locate files
across deeply nested folders using the built-in Flat
View combined with Wildcard Selection.
Step 1: Open the Archive in 7-Zip File Manager
- Launch 7-Zip File Manager.
- Navigate to and open the target archive (e.g.,
.zip,.7z,.tar,.rar), or right-click the archive file in Windows Explorer and select 7-Zip > Open archive.
Step 2: Switch to Flat View
By default, 7-Zip displays files within their nested directory structures. Flat View collapses the folder hierarchy and lists every file in the entire archive in a single window.
- Click View in the top menu bar.
- Select Flat View.
All files contained in subfolders will now appear in one continuous list.
Step 3: Locate the Specific File
Once Flat View is active, you can find your file using either of the following methods:
Method A: Wildcard Selection (Best for partial names or extensions)
- Press the Plus key (
+) on your numeric keypad, or click Edit > Select... in the top menu. - In the input box, enter a search pattern using wildcards:
- To find a specific word anywhere in the name:
*keyword* - To find a specific file type:
*.pdfor*.log - To find an exact file name:
document.txt
- To find a specific word anywhere in the name:
- Click OK.
- 7-Zip will automatically highlight all files matching your query across the entire archive.
Method B: Quick-Type Navigation (Best for known file prefixes)
- Click on the Name column header to sort files alphabetically.
- Click once on any file in the list.
- Rapidly type the first few letters of the file name. The selection will jump directly to the first matching entry.
Step 4: Extract or View the Found File
With the matching file located and selected:
- Double-click the file to open and view it in its default application.
- Click the Copy or Extract button
on the toolbar (or press
F5) to extract only the selected file to a folder of your choice, bypassing the need to extract the entire archive.
