How to Pause and Resume Archive Jobs in 7-Zip

Creating large compressed archives can consume significant CPU and disk resources, which may slow down other tasks on your computer. Fortunately, 7-Zip includes a built-in feature that allows you to temporarily halt an active compression job without canceling it or losing your progress. This guide outlines the exact steps to pause and resume archive creation using the standard 7-Zip graphical interface, as well as how to manage jobs running in the command line.

Pausing and Resuming via the 7-Zip Graphical Interface

When you create an archive using the 7-Zip GUI, the software displays a progress dialog showing elapsed time, remaining time, compression ratio, and speed.

  1. Locate the Progress Window: Ensure the 7-Zip compression window for your active job is visible on your screen.
  2. Click the Pause Button: In the lower-right area of the progress dialog, click the Pause button.
  3. Verify the State: 7-Zip will immediately halt compression. The elapsed timer will stop counting, disk write activity will cease, and the CPU usage dedicated to the process will drop to zero. The button text will change from "Pause" to Continue.
  4. Resume the Job: When you are ready to continue the archive creation, click the Continue button. The process will pick up seamlessly from the exact block where it stopped.

(Note: You can also click the Background button next to Pause if you simply want the job to run at a lower process priority without stopping it completely.)

Pausing and Resuming 7-Zip Command-Line Operations

If you are running archive creation via the command line (7z.exe or 7za.exe), there is no native interactive keyboard shortcut to pause the job. However, you can suspend and resume the process using Windows tools:

  1. Open Resource Monitor: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, navigate to the Performance tab, and click Open Resource Monitor at the bottom (or press Win + R, type resmon, and press Enter).
  2. Find the Process: Go to the CPU tab and locate 7z.exe in the Processes list.
  3. Suspend the Process: Right-click 7z.exe and select Suspend Process. Confirm the action. This immediately freezes compression and releases hardware resources.
  4. Resume the Process: When you are ready to proceed, right-click 7z.exe in Resource Monitor again and select Resume Process.
