How to Combine Split Archives in 7-Zip
Combining multi-volume split archives back into a single file is a
straightforward process using 7-Zip. Large archives are frequently
divided into smaller segments—often bearing extensions like
.7z.001, .part1.rar, or
.zip.001—to make storage and transfer more manageable. This
guide provides step-by-step instructions on preparing your split files,
combining them using 7-Zip's context menu, and utilizing the 7-Zip File
Manager for raw split files.
Step 1: Organize Your Files
Before starting the extraction, ensure the files are ready for 7-Zip to process sequentially:
- Place all split parts (e.g.,
file.7z.001,file.7z.002, etc.) in the exact same folder. - Verify that none of the parts are missing. If a single part is absent, the archive cannot be rebuilt.
- Ensure all files share the exact same base name. Do not rename individual volumes differently from the rest of the set.
Step 2: Extract the First Volume (Standard Archives)
7-Zip automatically detects and combines split volumes when you begin extracting the primary file. You do not need to extract each part individually.
- Locate the first file in the sequence. Depending on the archive
format, this will usually end in
.001,.part1.rar, or simply.zip. - Right-click the first file.
- Hover over 7-Zip in the context menu.
- Select Extract Here or Extract to "[Folder Name]".
- 7-Zip will automatically read through all subsequent volumes in the directory and reassemble the full original file into your designated folder.
Step 3: Use "Combine Files" for Raw Split Files
If your files were split as raw binary data (not a standard archive format) or the context menu extraction fails, use the internal combination tool within 7-Zip:
- Open the 7-Zip File Manager.
- Navigate to the folder containing your split segments.
- Select the first volume (
.001). - Click File on the top menu bar, then select Combine Files....
- A dialog window will appear displaying the detected parts and the target destination. Click OK to merge the files into a single output file.
Troubleshooting Common Errors
- Unexpected end of data / CRC Failed: This indicates that one or more volumes are corrupted or incomplete. Re-download the specific volume that triggered the error.
- Volume missing: Ensure all files follow identical sequential numbering and reside in the same folder.
- Wrong password: If the split archive is encrypted, enter the password when prompted during the extraction of the first volume; it will apply to all connected parts.
